If you are a roofing contractor in Illinois, there is a legal requirement and it is also a necessary step to build a professional reputation and long term success in the industry. The Illinois Roofing License proves you are qualified.
The client knows that you know what you’re doing, and have a handle on safety and legal standards. It gives clients the confidence they need and keeps you safe from the clutches of the law. Let's look at why this license matters and how you can get it.
In Illinois, operating without a roofing license can be very bad. In order to maintain high roofing standards, the state also requires contractors to be licensed. This protects consumers and forces contractors to stand behind their workmanship.
Having an Illinois Roofing License also goes beyond just legal compliance, it also increases your credibility. Homeowners and businesses prefer working with professionals that meet state requirements instead of owning a license themselves thus preferring to hire licensed contractors. Also, you’ll achieve a competitive edge in the ‘marketplace’ because many insurance companies and suppliers will want to work with licensed contractors.
There are also more opportunities with a roofing license. Contractors need to have a valid license for many larger projects, like commercial contracts or government work. Meeting this prerequisite puts you in a position to bid on these high value jobs and gives you the opportunity to grow and increase your profitability.
Damaku Organisation Digital Marketing proudly expresses steps to getting your Illinois Roofing License. Here’s what you need to do:
Before applying for a roofing license, make sure you are eligible for the state. Proof of liability insurance, and being at least 18 years old and having a valid Social Security number are some of these. In order to protect both the contractors and the clients, the insurance must satisfy Illinois’ minimum coverage to.
Illinois offers two types of roofing licenses: Residential and Unlimited. The Residential License is for projects within single family homes and small residential buildings, while the Unlimited License is for residential and commercial projects. Prioritize choosing a license that heeds your business goals.
The licensing process is not complete without the roofing exam. It tests your familiarity with roofing principles, safety practices, building codes and Illinois specific regulations. If you’re already able to study on your own, you may want to enroll in a roofing exam prep course, like the ones offered here at Illinois Roof Prep, to build the confidence you need to pass the exam.
After you’re ready, fill out and submit your roofing license application to the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation (IDFPR). Remember to upload all the necessary documentation such as proof of insurance and any related fees. Make sure your application is accurate so that you don’t have to wait for something unnecessary.
Once you get final approval for your application, you’ll get instructions on the process needed for your roofing exam. After the test, you’ll receive your Illinois Roofing License which will make you a licensed contractor in the state.
After getting your license, you need to keep it by renewing it and keeping up to date with industry standards. Continuing education is required every two years to renew a license in Illinois, and to keep contractors up to date on changes in regulations and best practices.
If you don’t renew your license on time, you can be penalized or have your license suspended, which means you can’t work legally. Renewal deadlines are something to keep track of and stay proactive with your education, so you don’t fall into these traps and continue to grow your business.
The Illinois Roofing License is a lot more than just a legal obligation, it’s a foundation for a successful roofing career. By getting and keeping your license, you show you are committed to quality, safety and professionalism in an industry where there are many competitors.
